Food market in Nice – Le Cours Saleya
From Paris I travel to the South of France. My second favorite city of France is Nice. When I need to chill for some days, I love to travel to this city, where I feel at home too :). Nice gives me the right holiday feeling. One of my favorite spots is the food market in Nice – Le Cours Saleya.
When you enter the Cours Saleya square, your senses will be overwhelmed by the beautiful colors of the houses, the vegetables, fruits and the scents of the flowers. It is one of my favorite places in Nice. First, I will tell you a little about the history of this unique square.
The Cours Saleya belonged to the upper classes in the past and is the most traditional square of Nice. The square is perfectly located in the old town of Nice and not far away from the Mediterranean and has always been the heart of the town. In 1706 the ramparts were dismantled and replaced by houses known as ‘les Ponchettes”. Theses houses were originally small warehouses of fishermen and early in the 18th century, the houses got another destination: they established terraces where the locals could stroll along and enjoy the sea and the views.
The fruit and vegetable market exist since 1861, soon followed the flower market. The flowers were shipped worldwide and the market kept growing very fast.
The square nowadays
Since 1980, Cours Saleya is a pedestrian only area. The selection of products is more varied nowadays. Herbs, soaps, local delicacies. You can visit the market every day, except Mondays, when the flea market takes it over. During the evening from May to September, you can admire the jewelry and crafts, which is very nice, because the coziness of the cafe’s, the smells from the many restaurants that serves typical Nicoise dishes and that makes it the most active hotspot of the town. So tempting if you ask me!
The market is, as it were a large color explosion. if you’re in the market, do not forget to look at the buildings around you, The colors of the houses around the square stabbing out wonderful on the beautifully arranged fruit and vegetables.
My advice is: I think it is a good idea to buy your lunch here and search for a good place along the sea to enjoy the good natural taste.
Enjoy the photos, this market is a real feast for the senses!
